Yuichi Toyama
Tokyo designer turning Sabae craft into two-line, neutral titanium frames.
The story
After more than a decade inside the Fukui eyewear industry and several years freelancing, Toyama launched his first private label, USH, in 2009. He set up Atelier Cinq in Tokyo the following year. In spring 2017, his 25th year in eyewear, he renamed the brand after himself to make the work more personal. Production has stayed in Sabae, where he pairs local craftsmen's traditional skills with new structures. He says he set out to counter the view abroad that Japanese craft was classic but not new. 02 People Founder, designer and CEO of Atelier Cinq Yuichi Toyama Tokyo, Japan Born in Tokyo in 1971, he studied product design at a technical school and then spent about 12 years at an eyewear maker in Fukui, working in planning and marketing.
