Rigards

Hong Kong atelier hand-carving horn, wood and metals into offbeat frames.

The story

Kwa and Virard had both collected glasses for more than 20 years and could not find frames they wanted, so they set out to make their own. They tried acetate and wood but found acetate too synthetic and settled on water-buffalo horn, a by-product sourced from farms in Africa, for its craft tradition and sustainability. The label went public in July 2012. The name riffs on the French word regards, meaning to look. Rigards has since added solid wood, sterling silver, copper, aluminium-magnesium and titanium, and it works with avant-garde fashion designers on regular collaborations.
