Matsuda
Gothic-meets-Art-Deco metalwork, hand-engraved and handmade in Sabae.
The story
Mitsuhiro Matsuda trained in fashion at Tokyo's Bunka college and built the Nicole label before taking his own name to New York in the early 1980s. Drawing on Paris, Gothic architecture, Art Deco and Machine Age metalwork, he released his first eyewear collection in 1989. In the 1990s the frames gained a cult following after appearing in films such as Terminator 2. The line then disappeared for several years. After Matsuda died in 2008, former Cartier sales director James Kisgen relaunched it in 2012, reissuing archive models alongside new designs, all handmade in Sabae.
