MASAHIROMARUYAMA
Tokyo designer's asymmetric 'unfinished art' frames, handmade in Sabae.
The story
After about 15 years designing frames, much of it from his own office, Masahiro Maruyama launched his label in October 2011 with dessin, a collection whose wobbly, imperfect lines echo a pencil sketch. He trained in traditional design but chose to break its rules: every frame starts as a freehand drawing, and he keeps the irregular lines and uneven sides. All production goes to a long-established factory in Sabae, where craftsmen turn these asymmetric drawings into wearable frames. New series have been shown at Silmo in Paris each year, and two of them won the Silmo d'Or Grand Prix.
