Sculptural sheet-acetate frames from a century-old Fukui eyewear family.

The story

FACTORY900 is the house label of Aoyama Optical, a small Fukui frame maker whose family began making glasses in 1905 near present-day Sabae. For decades the company produced plastic frames for other brands, and from the 1970s it built its own numerically controlled cutting machines. In 2000 Yoshinori Aoyama launched a brand to show what that sheet-acetate expertise could do, naming it after the factory's registration number, 900, in the Fukui eyewear cooperative. Planning, design and production all stay in-house. 02 People Founder, designer and managing director Yoshinori Aoyama Fukui, Japan Born in 1972 into a three-generation Fukui eyewear family, he grew up next to the factory and worked in sales for a local lacquerware maker before joining Aoyama Optical.
