Colour-loving US indie with a flexible one-piece hinge and Japanese craft.

The story

Mewha and Nelson met as sales reps at Optical Shop of Aspen, where Mewha spent about a decade on the Japanese Matsuda line. Both brought that experience of working with Japanese artisan makers to their own brand. In 1999 they left to start Bevel, despite having no formal design training. Their aim was wearable, flattering frames whose colours took cues from cosmetics palettes. The founders say the brand found its real identity only after three or four collections, and it later became known for its patented one-piece hinge. 02 People Co-founder, designer and president Richard Mewha Devon, England; ex-Alain Mikli and Optical Shop of Aspen British-born and New York-based, with a business degree from a French business school.
