Thom Browne

New York tailor's mid-century frames, made in Japan, tipped in tricolour.

The story

Browne started his business in 2001 with five suits in a by-appointment shop in New York's West Village. He became known for rethinking the traditional uniform by questioning its proportions. In 2011 he signed a global eyewear licence with Dita, and a 20-style men's optical and sun collection followed that autumn. It drew on mid-century professors, architects, politicians and artists and carried his red, white and blue stripe. In 2022 the company ended the arrangement and brought eyewear in-house. 02 People Founder and chief creative officer Thom Browne Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA Earned an economics degree at the University of Notre Dame, where he was a competitive swimmer, then tried acting in Los Angeles. In New York he sold at Armani's wholesale showroom and led design at Club Monaco, then part of Ralph Lauren, before launching his label in 2001.
